FIELD STUDY : JIM THOMPSON FARM, NAKON RATCHASIMA, THAILAND

The community proposed that visiting Jim Thompson Farm will be more meaningful for them than to Julamai Thai Co., Ltd., to learn about agricultural tourism destination that harmonizes local Isan culture with a link silk production. They can immerse in nature and Isan’s unique culture, especially sericulture. They have been able to relate and share the intrinsic value of the Isan way of life and reconnect younger generations with their vibrant cultural roots, fostering pride in their collective heritage. The main stations that the participants visited are as follows:


1.     Monmhai Mulberry Silk Exhibition

Silk weaving is a local Isan tradition that Jim Thompson Farm is proud to help preserve. By continuing and co-developing this exhibition, you will learn about Jim Thompson’s unique silk production process. It starts with the cultivation and breeding of silk worms, raising them to produce fibers, reeling silk, pushing cotton, dyeing, and finally, the downstream process of weaving silk threads into beautiful patterned fabric.

2.     Jim Thompson Farm 2023 ‘A Love Letter To You’

This year’s event, themed ‘A Love Letter To You’ draws inspiration from the poignant song composed by Ajin Panchapak and beautifully sung by Manee Maneewan in 1967. The song, often overlooked in history, captures the essence of Isan during the Cold War era, reflecting nostalgia and shared emotions among the Isan people. Aligning with Jim Thompson Farm’s mission, the event aims to provide an authentic travel experience reminiscent of ‘Isan locals,’ fostering a unique identity that resonates with pride of the local people.

3.     Flower Field

Stop by to take impressive photos and admire the beauty of the fields of sweet cosmos flowers contrasting with the green of the pine trees and mountains in the background, as well as the blue of the winter sky.

4.     Rice is Life Exhibition

Appreciating every grain of harvest and outstanding cooked rice from different parts of Thailand.

5.      The World of Molam Exhibition

Lam Loke, The World of Molam is an exhibition on Molam, the traditional music and theater genre from Isan (Northeast Thailand) and Laos. It is a key part of the identity of ethnic Laotians, for whom it is an expression of pride and joy.

6.     Workshop

Traditional Isan dessert workshop, exploring the secrets of the ingredients used in traditional Isan desserts with hands-on experience of creating delicacies like Khao Thip, Khao Madhupayas, Khao Mao, Khao Khiat.

7.     Talk

Hearing talks of various folklore artists and go back in history to appreciate Isan culture that is connected with sericulture and rice farming in the old days.
